Summit County Animal Rights Enforcement

Dear SCARE Visitors:

In all fairness to to the Summit County Animal Shelter, the environment and care of the dogs and cats has vastly improved. It has taken years of exposure and persistence by many dedicated people and organizations to bring forth these changes. There have been protests, government resistance, death threats, mass euthanizations, and much more exposed to create a public awareness of the atrocities occurring at the Summit Animal Control Facility.

Thanks to never failing dedication by those involved in ending the horrors at this facility, we recognize the following very positives:

1. A part time Veterinarian has been hired.

2. A full time Vet Tech has been hired.

3. All adoptable dogs are being vaccinated for the following:
●	Distemper
●	Adeno Virus
●	Leptospirosis
●	Parvo
●	Parainfluenza
●	Rabies


4. All adoptable cats are being vaccinated for the following:
●	Feline Rhinotracheitis
●	Calici
●	Panleukopenia
●	Chlamydia Viruses
●	Rabies

5. All incoming dogs and cats are treated for worms and fleas

6. Volunteers are encouraged to apply

7. Adoptable dogs and cats are being held well beyond the minimum three day hold

On the downside, though, Summit County government refuses to allow non-profit, 501c3 recognized rescue groups to save animals without having a contract. Although the fee would be $10 instead of $32, groups who used to rescue from the Summit County Animal Control Facility would have to make available confidential information of who the animal was adopted to. This has driven away every rescue group except one. Neighboring Portage County GIVES the impounded dogs and cats to recognized 501c3 rescue groups. Rescue groups are now going to the low/no cost county pounds. It appears that Summit County Government would rather have animals die than to be saved. We are hoping this will change.

Also a flaw is that the adoptable animals are not listed on Petfinder.com, where thousands of potential adopters visit everyday. Adoptable animals can be seen on an unknown website: www.summitanimalcontrol.com. We are hoping this will also change.
